Defamation

It can take years of investment and hard work to develop your reputation, and the slightest slur can have a devastating impact.  Today’s news is no longer tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapper, quickly discarded.  The effects of what is said about you online can be felt for many years.

Defamatory statements may be made or spread by competitors, customers or disgruntled employees. Stories are easier to search online and identities are easier to conceal. These are often re-posted (however innocently) by journalists, aggregator sites or bloggers. Each time, the information is cached into another site’s memory.

It is therefore important to act quickly in the event that defamatory information is published about you. We can provide urgent guidance on how to identify the source of the information and your rights and remedies against the original and any subsequent publisher.

Where the information is published by a blogger, we can help you to obtain an order against the host site for disclosure of the blogger’s registration details and the removal of the offending article.

We also frequently act for those accused of making defamatory statements as well as for third parties accused of innocent publication.
